Round Seventeen vs Wests - Sedgman Oval

It was looking like the perfect day with clear skies, a little breeze and wins by all the Division One grades and Premier Colts.  Requiring a bonus point win to keep our finals chances alive, players and supporters had high hopes.

Wests, already out of finals contention, missed the memo and came out fighting.  With the Alec Evans Trophy and pride on the line, the Doggies were bruising in defence and ferocious at the breakdown with the Magpies isolated runners shown no mercy.

With a only one try-a-piece in the first half Souths led into the break by a penalty goal 10-7.  Early in the second half, the sides again exchanged tries and at 17-14 to Souths, our door to the finals was still open, only to be slammed shut by three unanswered West's tries and a 31-17 victory.

On the brighter side, Div One grades 1, 2, and 3, Colts 1 and 2, and Premier Colts are still in finals contention.  Get up to Chipsy Wood this Saturday for Souths Rugby's Community Day and cheer them home.

Round Sixteen vs Easts - Chipsy Wood Oval

For the penultimate home game, Souths invited the Easts Tigers to the Nest and with Souths needing to win to keep their final chances alive.

The day started well with victories in all Division One grades, with Simon McNeven chalking up his 300th for the club and his umpteenth try while doing so.

It was also Life Members and Sponsors Day, and while they were treated to Souths hospitality off the field, they were treated with a spectacle on the field.

Once again it was star-winger Dominic Lespierre, thrilling spectators with another darting run finished with scintillating speed to chalk up Souths only try of the first half, converted in testing conditions by Luke Everson. Unfortunately, Easts were quick to respond and the scores stayed locked into halftime.

With Quade Cooper on duty with Fox Sports for the ARU, Premier Colt Luke Everson, playing only his second game of Premier Rugby, stepped into fly-half and with an outstanding performance both in defence and attack, his inside pass put the flying Dominic Lespeirre through a gap for his second try for the match.

Dom is the leading try-scorer in Premier Grade (with 13 tries) and top try scorer overall (with 20 tries).

Unerring defence followed from both sides and with Easts only able to manage a late penalty to salvage a bonus point, Souths won 14-10.

The win leaves Souths still in touch of the finals, albeit dependent on other results falling our way.

All three Colts sides finished with wins making it a clean swoop for the Mighty Magpies.
