Souths v Easts 19 April, 2008
With Souths current form, they headed into the match as favourites. Keen to upset, Easts opened the scoring with a converted try. Putting Souths on the back foot, Easts continued to show some solid defence, with Souths unable to break the line. Slowly some momentum crept back into the Souths line, before crossing over for a converted try to level the score.
However the Tigers continued to put pressure on, and were able to capitalise and hit back with an unconverted try.
Heading into the second half behind, running with the wind, the boys lifted and started to show why they are undefeated. Some solid work by the forwards, set the platform for some good clean ball, and things started to happen. Inject Sacha “200” Laws into the mix, and the game comes alive! The momentum swung to Souths, and the forwards drove a lineout over the line with a textbook maul. With the scores level, and the boys picking up more momentum, a try to take the lead followed. Souths continued to pressure the Tigers line, but the whistle came before more points could be given, and Souths finishing with a 17-12 win.

Congratulations to Sacha Laws, who played his 200th game for Souths, still wearing his first pair of Souths shorts.

Souths v GPS 12 April, 2008
The 3rd match for the season was a top of the table clash between Souths and GPS Fourths. It was always going to be a tough match, and the boys attitude reflected that.

Souths got off to a very similar start as the previous week vs. Wests, scoring an early try, and conceding an early try. Troy ‘forearms first’ Johnson ended the game prematurely for one unlucky GPS player who continued a tackle on TJ after the whistle. The match was an even contest between the two sides, with Souths scoring another unconverted try, before GPS levelled back with a try of their own just before half time. With the second half underway, the match on a knife edge, the teams temper started to shorten. The niggle eventuated with a scuffle, but with no sin bins. The teams got back into business, with Souths getting the advantage 22-10. GPS fought hard and were rewarded with a converted try, taking the game to 22-17. Both teams dug deep, but eventually Souths were the stronger team, holding out GPS to seal the win, with another bonus point.

A dishonourable mention must go to Joe ‘knee deep’ Evans, no further explanation required. And a special mention must to go Ry’s forehead, which isn’t perfect anymore.

Souths v Wests 5 April, 2008
The weather turned on for the clash, and the footy was just as good. The boys came out firing, and were rewarded with an early try. However, Wests were just as determined and hit back with their own try. With the game on a see-saw, the Michael ‘Golden Boot’ Munro restart trickled out off Wests inside their 22. With the boys on the charge, and the forwards doing some top work up front, the backs crashed over to take the lead again. A fresh new style cut was not enough to protect Ty’s head, copping a knock he was forced from the field.
The boys continued to show great signs of things to come this season, and were camped in the Wests 22 for a good 10 minutes, before Foley lost the ball over the line. Still within striking distance, the backs showed their magic once again, with Rowdy slicing through their defence. With Souths showing signs of running away with the game, some refereeing decisions began to slide Wests way, eventuating with Shaun ‘you couldn’t tell it was me’ Leat being Yellow carded for hands in the ruck. With a man down, Wests hit back to bring the game to 15-14.
With 15 to go, the boys tightened up, and really started to get some momentum. Some inspiring words from coach Stu ‘Hiddink’ Walsh, had the team focused, and finally running away with a 34-14 win.
Dishonourable mentions must go to Lucas “should I kick, no I’ll run, no I have to kick it’ Walmsley, and to Hiddink, who after injecting himself onto the wing, had the try line begging after a perfect Cardi kick, but couldn’t find the wheels in the chase.

Saturday evening was also a players ‘meet and greet’ at ‘the Nest’. Fourth grade was very well represented, creating a solid platform to a great night out.

With Brothers being on the lower end of the table, confidence was high leading into the clash. Souths played well, however some refereeing calls managed to keep the scoreline low. Souths won 36-5.

Souths V Uni 3 May, 2008
Top of the table clash, when Souths hosted Uni. Both teams coming into the clash undefeated, the game was going to be close.
The first half Souths didn’t play their strongest rugby, with a fairly even contest. A half time lecture from Hiddink and Eccy had the boys ready, and the game swung towards Souths. The final score 33-18, Souths stamping their authority on the Fourth grade competition.

Souths V Sunnybank 10 May, 2008
Sunnybank only having 1 win for the season coming into the match, Souths had all the confidence. Struggling to have a backline, Sasha “200” Laws was called into the team. Arriving late, 200’s warm up consisted of half a tube of Deep Heat and a bitch about being run on.
Despite having a oversized team, Sunnybank did little to stop the romping from the Magpies. Souths never looked in doubt, destroying Sunnybank 79-3.

Dishonhourable mentions must to to Aaron “Lightning” Willis, as lightning never hits the same place twice, just like the lineout throws.

Saturday was also Ladies Day.. With plenty of ladies filled with Champagne, the boys had some beverages of their own, before heading into the Nest to mingle with the lovely ladies. Highlights of the night included ‘Lightning’ getting the lowest bid at auction, and when Munro’s go bad.

Team Reports
Souths V Brothers 28 June, 2008

Brothers have had a season turnaround. Aftter finding themselves on the bottom of the ladder in this Clash Rd 1, have gone on to climb back to 5th, pushing for Uni for a finals berth.

Highlights of the game included some quick thinking by Sasha Laws, for a quick lineout infront of the Brothers team, to give Michael ‘the Smiling Chinaman’ Munro at 65m untouched try.
Souths ended up running away with a win, 31-7

Souths V Uni 5 July 2008

With atrocious weather for the Round 2 clash, the game was going to be won by the team which could hold onto the ball. Steady rain began falling early in the morning, and had the Uni fields soaking by kickoff.
The game was a very slow game, living up to all expectations of a wet weather game. Highlights included Casey Green’s barnstorming runs, destroying the Uni defence, as well as a chip and regather for a try beside the posts by substitue winger, Daniel Walsh.
Souths won 29-0.

Souths V Sunnybank 12 July 2008

The Round 1 Clash between Sunnybank and Souths ended in a 79-3 thumping of the Bank by Souths. Sunnybank appeared to have the size dominance again, however lacked any skill to be anywhat competitive. Realising they were in for another toweling, and with no chance of making the finals, Sunnybank players decided to play less football, and more niggle. Sunnybank substituted on Goliath’s son, who after only minutes in the game was already causing more damage then playing football. After a few cheap shots by the Sunnybank replacement, a scuffle began, which resulted in the offending Sunnybank player, as well as a Souths player to be Red carded. After the incident, the boys began to play football again.

Missing a fullback, Souths still managed to keep the Sunnybank team scoreless, whilst the Sunnybank team was giving tries to Souths, for a 47-0 win.

Match Report
Souths v Easts 21 June, 2008

Coming off the first loss of the season, Souths were determined to seal a good win. Training hard during the week, coaches Stu and Eccy had the team ready physically and mentally.
The team looked sharp on all elements, including defence where Tene managed to do one of the tackles of the season on the Easts kicker.

The game never really looked in doubt, with Easts only making one major threat, which was thwarted by Rowdy running away with a 95m intercept try. The Magpies outplayed the Tigers, showing that they are one of form teams of the comp, with the final whistle ending a 34-0 win.

Saturday was also the club’s 60th Anniversary. The boys ventured back up to the Nest, to watch Premier Grade take on the in-form Tigers, followed by some lager with past and present players.

Dishonhourable mentions must to to Aaron “Lotto” Willis, as the Gold Lotto’s winning numbers are more consistent than his line-out throws.

Saturday was also Ladies Day.. Souths V Redlands 17 May, 2008

Souths were too strong for Redlands 24-5.

Souths V Logan 24 May, 2008

Souths were once again too strong for their opponents, 34-5

Souths V Norths 31 May, 2008

The game against Norths was a washout, and is yet to be played.

Souths V Wests 7 June, 2008

After a week of semi inclement weather, Friday night brought on another heavy shower, preparing the Wests field for a day of sloppy, mud football.
Hiddink called away with work duties, Sheepy took the reins of the team with Eccy. With the warm-up bearing striking resemblance to a 5km swim, it was clear the game was going to be won in the forwards.
The game lived up to a forwards game, with the field condition contributing to a slow, error ridden game, giving the backline a very quiet day.
The end result was a 17-12 win to the Magpies.

A dishonourable mention goes to Joe “Rawlinson” Evans, who in textbook style hurdled the Wests defence, putting in his claim for selection in the Bejing Olympic Athletics team.

Souths V GPS 14 June, 2008

Yoku Road turned on the weather for the top of the table clash. GPS having home games for the rest of the season, it wasn’t going to be an easy task taking on the Gallopers at home. GPS sitting on 44 points, breathing down out backs on 48 (with a game in hand), it was to be the must win game of Round 2.
After some inspiring words by Hiddink, the boys were ready for kick off. The first half of the game went mostly Souths way, however a couple of penalties let the Gallopers take the lead, 6-5. The forwards were playing well, turning over a lot of ball, whilst the backs were solid in attack and defence.
Just on half time, Torban’s knee gave way in an akward tackle. Torban had only just returned from injury, and was playing extremely well
The second half momentum swung GPS way, with the gallopers taking the lead 13-5. Souths dug deep, and produced a couple of brilliant plays, which had the Magpies camped in the GPS 22, however pressure got the better of the ‘pies, with no points rewarded.

The game finished with a 13-5 GPS win. It was a hard fought win for GPS, and the loss now gives the Magpies some motivation for the charge to the finals.

A dishonourable mention must go to Joe ‘Capper’ Evans, who wasn’t quite satisfied with hurdling, decided to test out his drop punt, hoping for selection in the 2008 AFL Draft.
